Muscat: The National Airline, Oman Air, has explained its ongoing transformation strategy, which includes organizational restructuring, in a statement issued on Thursday.
The airline said that it has been implementing a comprehensive transformation program to achieve financial stability by improving the efficiency of operational processes, which is aimed at achieving sustainability in the future.
The company has categorically denied reports of laying off 1,000 employees and added that none of the Omani employees were terminated due to the restructuring, but the fact that the number of surplus employees was 365.
A severance package was offered to these employees in appreciation of their service to the company, giving them a sufficient period of no less than four weeks to make a final decision without prejudice to their employment rights and privileges.
The transformation process included implementing a set of measures to rationalize costs, improve the network and fleet, and renegotiate several major contracts.
These procedures also included reviewing the organizational structure and determining the optimal level of workforce in terms of the number, experience, and competencies required to achieve sustainability in line with the company’s needs.
The company worked on developing a new, more effective organizational structure that keeps pace with what is practiced in the aviation sector and meets the company's future needs.
This structure was announced in several stages over the past 18 months.
In the first stage, the company offered a severance package for Omani employees, which benefited many Omani employees.
In the restructuring, the company was keen to give priority to the available jobs to the Omani employees, which led to the decision to dispense with 426 expatriates.
The Omanization rate has improved since the beginning of the transformation, as it has gone up from 74 to 78 percent.
The Omanization rate in most of the company's departments has exceeded 90 percent and it seeks to increase the Omanization rate in more departments.
