India set up Pakistan final in Junior Asia Cup

Muscat: Marquee teams India and Pakistan booked a final showdown in the Men’s Junior Asia Cup 2024 hockey championship after beating their semifinal opponents at the Hockey Oman Stadium in Al Amerat, Muscat on Tuesday night.
India made a technically sound performance against Malaysia to prevail 3-1 while Pakistan scraped past a fighting Japan 4-2.
India opened scoring in the 10th minute as Dilraj Singh struck a field goal. India led 1-0 at the half-time as both teams missed some chances.
Rohit increased the lead for India in the 45th minute from a penalty corner. Sharda Nand Tiwari made it 3-0 from another penalty corner in the 52nd minute after a series of saves from Malaysian goalkeeper Mohammed Rafaizul.
Azimuddin Kamaruddin returned one goal for hard-working Malaysia from a penalty stroke in the 57th minute.
Both the teams earned seven penalty corners in the match. India’s five of the seven penalty corners came in the last quarter.
The PR Sreejesh-coached team guarded their 3-1 advantage during the final minutes to set up a final showdown against Pakistan on Wednesday. The match will kick-off at 7 pm (Oman Time).
PAKISTAN PREVAIL
In the first semifinal, Pakistan broke free in the final quarter to overcome a stiff challenge from Japan.
Tied 2-2 at the end of third quarter, Pakistan took the decisive lead in the 48th minute when Hannan Shahid netted his second field goal.
Star player Sufyan Khan made no mistake from a penalty stroke in the 52nd minute as Pakistan sealed their final entry with a 4-2 result.
Earlier, after a barren first quarter, Pakistan went ahead in the 27th minute with a field goal from Hannan. Japan levelled the score after three minutes through a field goal from Tsubasa Tanaka.
After the half-time break, Pakistan took the lead again when Basharat Ali struck from a penalty corner in the 38th minute. Japan drew parity three minutes later as Rakusei Yamanaka converted a penalty corner to make it 2-2.
In the 9-10 placement match, Oman edged Chinese Taipei 3-2 in penalties after a 1-1 draw at the regulation time.
Teng-Kuan Wang put Chinese Taipei in the lead in the third minute with a field goal. Oman restored parity in the last minute of first quarter as Hudhaifa al Balushi netted a field goal.
In the shoot-out, Chinese Taipei could only manage two goals from their five penalties while Oman scored three goals from their four attempts.
In 5-8 position matches, Bangladesh thrashed Thailand 7-2 while China prevailed over South Korea 3-2.
