More than hundred camels from several parts of the Sultanate of Oman participated in the Al Ardah camel show in the Wilayat of Al Amerat last week. The event began with 'Al Tagroodah and Al Hambal” where participants greeted the audience while singing local poems inspired by Omani heritage.
Participants began showcasing their skills while wearing traditional attire. Each round starts with two participants demonstrating their skills over a distance of up to 800 metres, then returning to the starting point where all participants gather.
‘Al Ardah’ requires high skills, the most important of which is that the participants are familiar with professional methods of taming camels and preparing them to enter the show arena. Dozens of people interested and passionate about watching such traditional shows have flocked to the show.
Although these shows require special skills, there is enthusiasm from the youth who did not hesitate to participate in this event. With the participation of youth, these events emphasise the necessity of teaching these skills to this age group with the aim of preserving this traditional heritage for future generations.
It is worth noting that Unesco has registered the ‘horse and camel Ardah’ on the World Heritage List. With this the Sultanate of Oman has achieved a great accomplishment in preserving the intangible cultural heritage. The government continues to support all programmes that contribute to preserving this cultural heritage to preserve it from extinction and pass it on to future generations.
