Muscat: The Oman Basketball Association (OBA) organised the 'Sports Performance Specialist' (SPS) programme in collaboration with the The programme, held over two days at the Seeb Club headquarters and Wawan Hall, was part of the association's strategy to enhance athletic performance and reduce injuries. It targeted 33 trainees, including physical therapists, sports teachers and basketball coaches.

The programme was inaugurated by Eng Khalfan al Naabi, OBA Chairman, in the presence of Vice-President Abu Bakr al Jahwari and Acting Secretary Said al Habsi. It covered key topics such as common basketball injuries and their prevention, designing training programmes to improve players' physical performance, and focusing on principles of strength and conditioning to equip fitness coaches with specialised skills.

Abu Bakr al Jahwari, Chair of the Technical Development Committee, emphasised that the programme represents a crucial step towards developing national competencies in strength and conditioning. He stated, “Through this programme, we aim to equip coaches with advanced scientific knowledge that helps reduce injuries, particularly non-contact injuries, while enhancing players' physical performance.”

He added that the participation of 33 trainees from various fields reflects the association's commitment to developing Omani basketball in line with the highest international standards.

Al Jahwari noted that the programme included both theoretical and practical sessions, with the theoretical components conducted at the Seeb Club headquarters and the practical sessions hosted at Wawan Hall. He stressed the importance of collaboration with local sports institutions, pointing out that partnerships between the association, local clubs and the private sector contribute significantly to the success of such initiatives.

From his perspective, Amir Eid, the programme’s international instructor, highlighted that this initiative aligns with Fiba’s efforts to develop physical training. He explained that the programme was designed in three progressive levels, with a strong emphasis on practical application. “The programme aims to prepare qualified personnel capable of driving real change in player development and raising the standards of physical training in local basketball,” he added.

Through this programme, the OBA underscores its commitment to achieving athletic excellence by investing in national talents and enhancing training standards to advance Omani basketball.
