The Sultanate of Oman has always been a friend in need for Türkiye, providing support when it is needed most. According to the Embassy of Türkiye in the Sultanate of Oman, these relations transcend the boundaries of time and place.
Speaking to the Observer, Dr Muhammet Hekimoğlu, Turkish Ambassador to the Sultanate of Oman, mentioned a kind gesture shown by Oman during the worst earthquake in Türkiye's history on February 6, 2023.
'We are truly thankful to the Sultanate of Oman for all the kind gestures, humanitarian aid, and their commitment to strengthening bilateral relations,' said Hekimoğlu. 'One commendable act of humanity was displayed during the devastating earthquake that affected 23 million people in Southern Türkiye and neighbouring Syria in early 2023.'
Following the directives of His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik, Oman opened an airbridge to transport relief aid and medical supplies to the earthquake-hit areas in Türkiye and Syria as soon as the disaster struck on February 6. Oman also sent a Search and Rescue Team from the Civil Defence and Ambulance Authority (CDAA) to assist in rescue and rehabilitation operations in the affected areas, where nearly 45,000 lives were lost in just two days.
'Not only that, Oman supported our embassy in spreading awareness about the relief campaign we initiated for the earthquake victims,' added the ambassador.
'This close partnership between the two countries has strengthened family, cultural, political and military relations, fostering a deep bond of friendship,' said the ambassador.
'The significant number of Omani citizens visiting Türkiye every year to explore historical and tourist sites, especially in the Black Sea region, is a testament to this long-standing historical affection.' 'Our political, economic and cultural ties have significantly improved and become more visible. Ministerial visits, technical delegations and discussions on potential cooperation opportunities in various fields have been frequent,' the ambassador stated.
As a reflection of this strong economic relationship, Türkiye hosted Qais bin Mohammed al Yousef, Minister of Commerce, Industry and Investment Promotion, in Ankara for the 11th session of the Türkiye-Oman Joint Economic Committee (JEC) Meeting.
