Two expatriate artists in Oman, Dr Rajulal Rafeek and Roshani Rajapaksha, have unveiled remarkable artworks to honour the 54th National Day. Their creations not only celebrate Oman’s leadership, culture and natural beauty but also embody their admiration for the country.

Dr Raju, an Indian management professional and talented artist, employs pen and wash techniques to depict the simplicity and values that define Oman.

His inspiration stems from personal encounters, such as a transformative meeting with Ahmed, an Omani under a palm tree in Muscat. Ahmed shared a story from his childhood about a humble farmer in Al Jabal Al Akhdhar, whose joy and wealth came from the land, community, and simplicity of life rather than material possessions.

“True wealth,” Ahmed reflected, “is not in possessions but in our ties to the land and people.” This message resonates deeply in Dr Raju’s work, which vividly captures Omani traditions and cultural vibrancy.

His watercolour washes emphasise the essence of his subjects, employing subtle yet meaningful details that evoke the spirit of Oman. Beyond painting, Dr Raju is also an avid writer, blending storytelling with visual art to create heartfelt tributes to the country he calls home.

Sri Lankan artist Roshani Rajapaksha celebrates Oman’s leadership with a breathtaking acrylic painting adorned with gold leaf.

Her work, ‘Oman 54th National Celebration 2024’, honours His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik and the late Sultan Qaboos, drawing symbolic parallels between their enduring leadership and Oman’s majestic mountains — emblems of strength and resilience.

Roshani’s artwork features iconic Omani symbols, such as the incense burner at Riyam Park, the water jug sculpture in Muscat, and the natural landscapes of Oman’s mountains and mosques.

These elements highlight Oman’s cultural roots and its harmonious connection to the environment. Her use of bold colours, intricate patterns, and a unique personal style adds depth and emotion to her creations.

“The leaders of Oman are like the mountains — steadfast, resilient, and deeply rooted in the country’s identity,” Roshani explains. The painting symbolises Oman’s balanced approach to progress, embracing modernity while staying grounded in its heritage. Gold leaf accents lend the artwork a regal touch, making it a fitting tribute to the National Day.

Beyond this, Roshani’s portfolio reflects her deep admiration for Oman’s traditions. From vibrant depictions of souks and architecture to scenes of daily life, her art captures the pride, unity, and resilience of the nation.

Her ability to combine personal artistry with cultural storytelling creates works that resonate with viewers and evoke national pride. Together, Dr Raju and Roshani have channelled their artistic talents to reflect the essence of Oman’s 54th National Day.

While Dr Raju’s works celebrate the values and simplicity that unite its people, Roshani’s creations pay homage to the country’s leadership and cultural heritage. Their tributes are powerful reminders of Oman’s remarkable journey, inspiring reflections on its enduring pride and unity.
