MUSCAT: Bayan College (affiliated with Purdue University) hosted its much-anticipated event Cultural Expressions on November 6, bringing together students, faculty and staff for a vibrant celebration of global diversity. Organised by the Department of English Studies, this event is one of the many held in each semester at the college campus, reflecting the institution’s commitment to experiential

learning.

The event featured the cultures of six countries: Oman, Turkiye, Palestine, China, Zanzibar and Korea. Each country was represented through a cultural booth where students shared food, literature, music, language and local traditions.

Dr Mohammed bin Juma al Kharousi, Dean of Bayan College, honoured the event with his presence. He praised the efforts of the students in making the event a success. He awarded prizes to the winners and the runners-up for in the debate competition. Gao Aotian, the esteemed Director of the Chinese

Ambassador’s office, also graced the occasion. Cultural Expressions stood as a testament to Bayan College’s emphasis on activity-based learning. The event, conceived by Dr Indu, the Head of the Department, is part of the Studies in Literature and Culture course handled by her. “Experiential learning goes beyond lectures and textbooks. Through events like this, students can engage with their academic studies in practical, real-world contexts,” Dr Indu said.

The topic of the debate held as part of the event was “Cultural Globalisation: Pros and Cons'. Strong performances from several students were seen, but the winners stood out with their compelling arguments. Hajer al Balushi emerged as the winner, followed by Raunaq al Ismaili, the first runner-up and Mahmood al Rajhi, the second runner-up.

The Omam club was coordinated by Muneera, who is the faculty in-charge of the club; the college club that hosts international students.

With a strong commitment to experiential learning and cultural engagement, Bayan College continues to provide its students with invaluable opportunities to learn, grow and connect with the world around them.
