SOHAR: Female students from Sohar University have pioneered a smart shopping cart powered by the Internet of Things (IoT), aiming to transform the retail experience in Oman.

The innovative cart is designed with a touch screen and barcode scanner, allowing shoppers to view product information, manage shopping lists, and make electronic payments — eliminating the need to wait in checkout lines.

The project, developed under the supervision of Sohar University's Technology Transfer Centre and funded by the Ministry of Higher Education, Research and Innovation, was led by students Hiba al Maamari, Adhari al Mahrouqi and Rawan al Maamari.

'This smart cart reduces congestion in major retail spaces, making shopping faster and easier,' explained team member Hiba al Maamari. The team hopes that this technology, if commercially adopted, will benefit Oman's retail sector and provide job opportunities for new graduates. — ONA
