YANQUL: The Sultanate of Oman’s mining ambitions took a significant step forward with the launch of the Mazoon Copper Project, a major development by Minerals Development Oman (MDO) aimed at enhancing the country’s copper production capabilities. In a ceremonial foundation stone laying event held in the Wilayat of Yanqul, Al Dhahirah Governorate, officials celebrated what will be the largest copper concentrate production facility in the nation, projected to produce 115,000 tonnes of copper concentrate annually with a 21.5 per cent purity level.

Spanning over 20 square kilometres, the Mazoon Copper Project positions Oman as a serious player in the global copper market. Abdulsalam bin Mohammed al Murshidi, President of the Oman Investment Authority, described the project as a substantial step in bolstering Oman’s role in copper production worldwide, reinforcing the growing mining sector as part of a diversified economy. “This project addresses a rising demand for copper globally, aligning with our mission to utilise the Sultanate of Oman’s mineral wealth to drive growth and diversify our economy,” said Al Murshidi.

Highlighting the anticipated economic benefits, Al Murshidi noted that the project will stimulate significant development in Al Dhahirah Governorate, particularly within the local Yanqul economy. The economic ripple effects are expected to create jobs, attract investments, and promote local industry.

Najeeb bin Ali al Rawas, Governor of Al Dhahirah, added that his office is committed to supporting MDO’s vision, especially in fostering community engagement and expanding local business opportunities, particularly for small and medium enterprises (SMEs). “We aim to facilitate sustainable economic growth by working closely with MDO to maximise the project’s benefits for Yanqul and the surrounding areas,” said Al Rawas.

The project’s local impact is further supported by MDO’s high Omanisation rate of 70 per cent, demonstrating the company's commitment to employing Omani talent in mining operations.

Shaikh Ali bin Mohammed al Busaidy, Wali of Yanqul, praised MDO’s commitment to investing in social initiatives that benefit the region, emphasising that the project strengthens local capacity and ensures the benefits are deeply rooted within the community.

Dr Badr bin Saud al Kharousi, MDO Chairman, highlighted that the Mazoon Copper Project is part of MDO’s broader strategy to transform Oman into a key player in mining on the global stage. Exploration at the project site has yielded promising results, revealing an estimated 22.9 million tonnes of commercial copper reserves. “Our investments in this project reflect our ambition to leverage Omani natural resources responsibly, creating lasting value for our economy and society,” said Al Kharousi.

The Mazoon Copper Project also represents a significant commitment to environmental responsibility. MDO has incorporated advanced, eco-friendly technologies that will minimise the project’s environmental impact while ensuring efficiency. Al Kharousi emphasised that MDO’s approach to mining is guided by sustainable practices to balance economic gains with environmental stewardship.
