MUSCAT: Several Omani companies in the fish sales and marketing sector have recently begun direct exports of fish products to China, marking a significant milestone for Oman’s fisheries industry. This expansion supports Oman Vision 2040’s aim to grow the fisheries sector into a profitable, sustainable contributor to the economy. By increasing fish exports and tapping into new markets, this move aligns with Oman’s broader strategy to enhance the sector’s economic impact.
Dr Masoud bin Sulaiman al Azri, Director General of Agricultural and Fisheries Marketing at the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources (MoAFWR), highlighted the strategic importance of this achievement. This new trade channel stems from a 'protocol' signed between the governments of Oman and China, establishing health and safety standards for marine products exported from Oman to China. The protocol ensures that Omani fish products meet rigorous inspection, quarantine, and veterinary health requirements, fostering trust and quality assurance in the Chinese market.
Following the agreement, 23 Omani companies have been accredited to export fish products to China. Each company underwent stringent evaluations to obtain fish quality control certificates that align with Chinese health and safety standards. The MoAFWR, working alongside Chinese authorities, supports ongoing certification processes to meet all compliance measures, reinforcing Oman’s reputation as a supplier of high-quality fish products.
Dr Al Azri emphasised that this new export pathway enhances economic ties between Oman and China while opening further opportunities for trade. By directly exporting to China, Oman strengthens its position as a reliable supplier in global seafood markets, promoting food security cooperation and adding value to the fisheries sector.
Omani fish production reached 793,000 tonnes in 2023, an increase of 6 per cent from 2022, with export volumes totalling 324,000 tonnes valued at RO 189 million. This direct export initiative is expected to boost these figures and contribute to Oman’s economic diversification. — ONA
