Duqm Refinery and Petrochemical Industries Company (OQ8) — a joint venture of OQ Group of the Sultanate of Oman and Kuwait Petroleum International — showcased its commitment to sustainability and education at the fourth edition of the Oman Science Festival (OSF), which began on Monday at the Oman Convention and Exhibition Centre (OCEC). Themed 'Our Sustainable Resources,' this year’s festival aims to engage students and the community in interactive learning experiences, fostering a deeper understanding of science and sustainable practices.

Speaking about OQ8's role in OSF, Saif al Minji, Head of Value Creation at OQ8, emphasised the company’s dedication to supporting Oman’s youth and the nation’s sustainability goals. “Part of our sustainability strategy is to ensure that we are actively contributing to nation-building in Oman,” he said.

Al Minji underscored OQ8's alignment with the Ministry of Education’s efforts to inspire the next generation of engineers and industry leaders.

“The Ministry has a world-class curriculum, and the private sector should support these efforts by engaging with and inspiring young minds,” he added.

At OSF, OQ8 has designed an innovative and immersive experience for students, aimed at illustrating the journey of energy from crude oil to refined products.

“We’ve created a multi-sensory experience for kids in a moving cinema, with visual and sound effects to make the learning process memorable,” Al Minji explained. This approach, he noted, makes complex topics like energy transformation accessible and engaging for younger audiences, aligning with OQ8’s goal to raise awareness about energy conservation and sustainability.

A key message that OQ8 hopes to convey at the festival is the essential role that the oil industry continues to play in Oman’s development.

“Many people might view oil negatively, but it has been instrumental in nation-building. Economically, socially, and environmentally, we contribute significantly,” said al Minji. Highlighting OQ8’s advanced refinery technology, he shared that it is one of the world’s most modern facilities and operates as a zero-flaring refinery, which minimises carbon emissions.

Al Minji acknowledged the challenges of raising awareness about sustainability, but expressed confidence in OQ8’s proactive role. “Sustainability awareness is still growing, and we are part of that journey, educating every stakeholder along the way. Sustainability remains a focus in everything we do,” he concluded.

With 520 interactive activities planned over eight days, OSF offers OQ8 a unique platform to inspire Oman’s youth and drive conversations around sustainability and innovation.
