‘Net 3’ to speed up zero-carbon emission goals

Muscat: The National Net-Zero Programme launched a new package of projects and initiatives called 'Net 3' in Muscat on Monday, aimed at an orderly transition to zero-carbon emission goals

The event was held under the auspices of Dr Khamis bin Saif al Jabri, Chairman of Oman Vision 2040 Implementation Follow-up Unit.

Dr Abdullah al Amri, chairman of the Environment Authority (EA), stated that the launch of the 'Net 3' package is part of efforts to meet Oman’s ambitious climate targets. He added that the third phase of net-zero, known as 'Net-Zero 3,' has been launched to reduce carbon emissions and achieve net-zero. He explained that these projects and initiatives cover key sectors, including energy, industry, transport, cities, and buildings. They are divided into enabling initiatives, projects with limited reductions, and high-impact reduction projects to achieve the net-zero targets in the near term and by 2050.

Dr Maryam al Busaidy, Head of the National Net-Zero Programme, highlighted the stages of the programme, current projects, and initiatives. 'Three new projects and initiatives have been signed and approved as part of the net-zero initiatives. The National Net-Zero Programme has worked diligently over the past few months in collaboration with various sectors, military, and security agencies. Today, we have reached an additional 108 projects and initiatives, bringing the total to 212 projects and initiatives from various sectors. The programme continues to expand its scope for tracking these projects and initiatives, and several initiatives will support the implementation of the national strategy for an organised transition toward achieving net-zero by 2050.'

Dr Maryam al Busaidy also highlighted the key achievements of the National Net-Zero Programme including the monitoring of 104 projects and initiatives, the endorsement of the national strategy within the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, activation of the net-zero clock in key sectors, and implementing an alignment plan with the national programme.

She also emphasised the adoption of the National Strategy for an Orderly Transition to Net-Zero under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.

In the transport sector, significant growth has been seen, with 36 projects aimed at promoting the use of electric vehicles, enhancing public transportation, and planting trees along roadsides through 11 new projects. The cities and buildings sector aims to build green, sustainable cities with 26 projects focused on infrastructure development, urban planning, and studying renewable energy sites.

In the environment and economy sector, 9 new projects have been added, bringing the total to 15 projects, including mangrove planting and waste-to-energy initiatives. Additionally, security and military bodies participated with 21 projects focused on enhancing energy efficiency and green buildings. In the education sector, 14 projects were introduced to promote sustainability for new generations through afforestation and supporting specialised laboratories in renewable energy.

The National Net-Zero Programme continues to monitor the implementation of projects aimed at reducing carbon emissions, focusing on achieving reduction targets by 2030 and 2040 through both main and supporting sectors that contribute to these efforts, ultimately aiming to reach Oman's national net-zero goal by 2050.
