MUSCAT: The Oman national girls’ 3x3 basketball team is participating in the Manama Cup 3x3 basketball tournament for girls, which started on Friday in Bahrain and continues until Saturday. Simultaneously, the team is preparing for the Neom tournament in Saudi Arabia, scheduled for November 7-8, with the participation of all GCC countries. The teams in the Neom tournament bear the names of Gulf cities, such as Muscat, Doha, Manama, Riyadh, Sharjah and Kuwait City.
Oman national team consists of four players: Shams al Khanji, Rubi al Kalbani, Nour al Kharousi and Ghadeer al Ismaili, under Tunisian coach Wafa Zaghdoud.
In discussing the team’s participation, Heba al Naabi, Chair of the Women’s Sports Committee in the Oman Basketball Association (OBA), explained that this tournament is part of a series of sports activities aimed at empowering Omani women in sports and supporting their involvement in Gulf championships. 'It creates a competitive environment that highlights their talents, not only in sports but in various fields, fostering pride and national identity.'
Al Naabi emphasised that such participation plays a significant role in promoting gender equality, noting the close cooperation between the OBA and the Women’s Sports Department at the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth, which have all contributed to overcoming challenges for women in Oman basketball.
She added that the success of Omani women in international competitions serves as an inspiration to girls and youth alike, reinforcing the belief in women’s ability to excel in all fields. She noted that Omani women’s participation in international championships goes beyond sports; it represents a step towards positive social change and advancing women's rights worldwide.
The first matches of Oman team in the Manama Cup have commenced, with Team Muscat facing two initial losses: one against the UAE team (Sharjah) with a score of 9-6 and another against the Saudi team (Riyadh) with a score of 15-8.
