London, Oct 31
Tottenham Hotspur continue in their quest for silverware while suffering a 16-year trophy-drought, going back to the League Cup final of 2008. They have progressed to the quarterfinals of the Carabao (League) Cup with a 2-1 win against an injury-ravaged Manchester City.
A delighted Tottenham manager, Ange Postecoglu, said: “My last win is always my best win. I want them to have these moments because I know how it can accelerate the group’s progress. In terms of becoming the team we want to be, nothing really changes – we are not there yet. But I’m really optimistic about our potential and that we’ve really got a high ceiling”.
He added: “City are always going to push you. I believe this team is growing all the time. We’ve had our stumbles but we always bounce back. It’s great for Timo (Werner) he’s been going through a tough time.”
City manager, Pep Guardiola, whose side suffered their first defeat since the FA Cup final in May last year, has concerns over the injuries his players are suffering. In addition to Kyle Walker, Jack Grealish and Kevin De Bruyne who will be out until after mid-November, Savinho was stretchered off with an ankle injury.
Spurs remained a spirited side throughout this riveting cup tie. They were quick with attacking thrusts and solid in defence when City put them under pressure. They took an early lead after just five minutes.
A clever flick by Brennan Johnson sent Dejan Kulusevski away on the right beating Ilkay Gundogan on the way before putting his pass across the box to Werner whose right-footed superb first time shot from halfway in the box gave no chance to Stefan Ortega in the City goal. It was the German’s first goal of the season and only his third in 26 games for the club.
Spurs then, in the 14th minute, lost the services of Micky van de Van with a hamstring injury and he was replaced in the defence by Destiny Udogie. The setback did seem to disrupt their momentum a little and Werner missed a chance when a ball from Gundogan was misplaced and went to him but his effort was weak.
But 20 minute after having taken the lead Tottenham were two goals up. Following a short corner Kulusevski exchanged passed with Werner before passing to Pape Matar Sarr who bent a shot brilliantly past Matheus Nunes from outside the box that beat Ortega inside the right-hand post.
City then dominated possession with a little over ten minutes before the break and were eventually able to reduce the deficit in the fourth minute of added time of the first half.
It came after a darting run by Savinho who found Numes at the far post and the firm drive by the Portuguese made it 2-1. Thereafter, Spurs remained solid in defence but City missed a great late chance of an equaliser when a fine shot by Nico O’Reilly brought a goal-line save by substitute Yves Bissouma.
City manager, Guardiola said: Congratulations! “This is the news. The news is not that we lost, it’s how for a long time we didn’t lose it.”
