MUSCAT: The Ministry of Housing and Urban Planning ( MoHUP), represented by the Directorate General of Housing and Urban Planning in Muscat Governorate will conduct a hiking session for the public on Wednesday, at the Bausher Old Countryside, according to the Ministry sources.

The event, to be held with the participation of wider public from different walks of life, is organised as part of the Urban October incorporating, will also host a number of other events aiming at sending out a message of healthy living.



'Healthy living in modern cities needs healthy people and this hiking is an attempt to shed more light on the importance of the same. We are expecting a large number of people to participate in the hike which will be held on Wednesday,' a representative of the event said.

In the Sultanate of Oman trekking or mountain climbing has been gaining popularity both as a fun and leisure and as a means of keeping oneself fit and this sport is used by individuals, groups for, and corporates as a team building exercise.



“Hiking is a wonderful sport and leisure activity for youngsters and it is really enjoyable for many in terms of the adrenaline rush that it gives and the health benefits that it provides,' said Mahmood bin Juma al Qasimi, an avid mountaineer who has conquered many peaks in the country.

However, many people who engage themselves in the sport with less or no safety measures have faced dangers which sometimes were fatal and the authorities have warned them to take necessary precautions.

First, one should know the location where he is trekking, and secondly or more importantly, having sufficient water to drink during the trail pays a lot. One gets more dehydrated as he or she goes further on the rough terrain hence, precautions are advised.



Earlier, the Directorate General of Housing and Urban Planning in Muscat Governorate has organised, as part of the Urban October, a discussion titled 'The Inspirers' in the Urban Hall of Al Khoury House under the auspices of Hussain al Lawati, Member of the Mjlis Ash'shura, Representative of the Wilayat of Muttrah, and Mohammed al Hanai, Assistant Director General of Scouts, Nazira al Harthy, Assistant Director General for Girl Guides, and Eng Zaman al Lawati CEO of Capital Group for Construction and Commercial Projects in attendance and moderated by Dr Amal al Jahwari, Director of the Media Department at the Majlis Ash'shura on October 21.
