Omani women have steadily gained financial and economic independence, becoming significant competitors alongside their male counterparts across various fields.
The business environment in Oman, coupled with its openness to both local and international markets, has enabled women to establish and grow private enterprises. Laws and policies aimed at gender equality and women’s empowerment have played a key role, fostering success beyond expectations for Omani women at both national and international levels.
His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik has highlighted the essential role of women in achieving Oman Vision 2040. This strategic framework emphasises policies that promote women’s participation in the workforce and ensures equal opportunities with men. Despite notable progress, further efforts are still needed to enhance women’s contributions to national development.
According to the National Centre for Statistics and Information (NCSI), as of June 2024, the number of Omani women employed in the government sector (aged 15 and above) reached 100,450, with 119,593 employed in the private sector.
Furthermore, 1,018,064 Omani women are engaged in private and family businesses, and 57 per cent of those working in craft industries are female. The economic participation rate of Omani women reached 32.1 per cent in 2022, a significant increase from 27.7 per cent in 2021.
Entrepreneurship has emerged as a dynamic platform for Omani women, reflecting the positive impact of Vision 2040 and shifting cultural attitudes towards supporting working women.

Omani women are making notable strides in sectors such as wholesale and retail trade, manufacturing, and construction, with prominent activities including building contracting, tailoring, and beauty services.
This growth is supported by various government initiatives, including the Oman Development Bank’s loan facilities and the Oman Chamber of Commerce and Industry’s project support.
Women are increasingly recognised as vital contributors to Oman’s sustainable development. Government policies have empowered them to participate fully in economic activities without discrimination.
Women enjoy equal rights under the Civil Transactions Law, which grants them access to bank loans, real estate, and other economic resources. The Commercial Law further ensures their ability to engage in business without gender-based barriers.
