At a workshop organised by the Oman Chamber of Commerce and Industry (OCCI) on Tuesday, October 15, 2024, more than 190 participants gathered online to discuss the challenges that Omani companies face in leveraging the Oman-US Free Trade Agreement (FTA) and the incentives available for small and medium -sized enterprises (SMEs).

Held via video conferencing, the session focused on the obstacles preventing local businesses from fully harnessing the agreement’s potential for accessing the US market.

Speaking to the Observer, Jason Buntin, the United States Trade Representative for Europe and Middle East Affairs, said that various incentives are available for Omani SMEs entering the US market. He noted that these businesses can benefit from support measures, including education and facilitation to streamline processes, enabling them to maximise the advantages of the trade agreement with the United States.

The workshop was organised in line with the strategic objectives of the OCCI, aligned with Oman Vision 2040 to expand the base of economic diversification. The Chamber plans to submit the workshop outcomes to the joint committee responsible for reviewing the Free Trade Agreement.

The discussions aimed to empower Omani companies to benefit from the agreement, fostering access to the US market while exploring new business opportunities and partnerships abroad. The session also reviewed the products and services covered by the agreement and those excluded, along with the reasons for their exclusion.

Notably, December will mark the 15th anniversary of the agreement’s signing, with several events planned to commemorate the occasion, including another workshop focused on the agreement.
