Italy and Oman share a unique and enriching relationship built on mutual respect and collaboration, particularly in the domains of cultural heritage and academic exchange. This partnership significantly contributes to the growth and development of both nations, allowing them to preserve historical legacies while promoting cultural understanding.

Recently, the Embassy of Italy in Muscat collaborated with the Omani Ministry of Heritage and Tourism, the Oman Across Ages Museum, and Sultan Qaboos University to host a symposium focused on the protection and promotion of cultural heritage. Held at the Oman Across Ages Museum on October 13, 2024, the event was part of the 24th edition of Italian Language Week, themed “L’Italiano e il Libro: il mondo tra le righe” (Italian and the Book: The World Between the Lines). This theme underscores the vital connection between the Italian language and literature while aligning with Oman’s commitment to preserving its rich cultural heritage.

The symposium served as a platform for Italian and Omani experts to showcase their collaborative efforts in archaeology and heritage conservation. Prominent Italian archaeologists and faculty from Sultan Qaboos University shared insights into ongoing archaeological missions in Oman, reflecting how Italy’s knowledge and expertise bolster Oman’s endeavours in safeguarding its historical sites.

Historical Ties

The roots of the Italian-Omani relationship can be traced back to the ancient maritime trade routes that connected Europe and the Arabian Peninsula. Italian merchants and explorers frequently visited Oman, intrigued by its strategic location along the trading waters of the Arabian Sea. Over centuries, these interactions laid the groundwork for a deeper understanding between the two cultures and an acknowledgement of shared interests in trade and culture.

In the modern era, diplomatic relations were formally established in the early 1970s, paving the way for more structured cooperation. Italy opened its embassy in Muscat in 1975, which helped solidify ties through diplomatic dialogue, economic partnerships, and cultural exchanges.

One of the most significant areas of collaboration between Oman and Italy is in cultural heritage preservation. Recognizing the importance of safeguarding archaeological sites, both countries have engaged in joint efforts to protect and promote their cultural narratives. Italian expertise in conservation has greatly benefited Omani heritage projects, particularly in archaeology and restoration.

Events like the Italian Language Week, featuring themes such as 'L’Italiano e il Libro: il mondo tra le righe,' showcase the shared commitment to cultural promotion. Recent symposiums organized by the Italian Embassy, in cooperation with the Omani Ministry of Heritage and Tourism, have focused on the protection and promotion of Omani cultural heritage. These gatherings serve as platforms for scholars and practitioners from both countries to share knowledge, research findings, and collaborative strategies, highlighting Italy's contributions to preserving Oman’s rich archaeological landscape.

Prominent Italian archaeologists and experts from institutions such as Sultan Qaboos University work hand in hand, spotlighting joint excavation missions and research on Oman’s historical sites. For instance, current discussions surrounding UNESCO World Heritage designation for areas like Bisya and Salut underline the importance of Italian contributions to Omani heritage studies.

Academic and Cultural Exchange

The partnership between Italy and Oman also extends into academia, enriching both nations through shared research and cultural experiences. H.E. Pierluigi D’Elia, Italy's Ambassador to Oman, highlighted how Oman’s innovative approach to preserving architectural heritage aligns with the goals of Oman Vision 2040. The collaborative initiatives, led by various stakeholders including the Omani Ministry of Heritage and Tourism and Italian archaeologists, emphasize the protection and celebration of cultural legacies.

Contributions from Sultan Qaboos University are immeasurable; Dr Mohamed Hesein stated that the collaboration with Italy has enhanced research on Oman’s historical sites and broadened the academic landscape. Italian experts have shared invaluable experiences in restoring Oman’s ancient forts, castles, and neighbourhoods, underlining the significance of these exchanges in both education and cultural preservation.

The research efforts of Italy’s archaeological missions in Oman have unearthed significant findings that illuminate the historical importance of sites like Bisya and Salut, currently under consideration for UNESCO World Heritage status. Prof. Andrea Zerboni from the Università degli Studi di Milano emphasized that the ancient water management systems, known as aflaj, exemplify Oman’s complex historical landscape and its global significance.

Additionally, the Omani-Italian Archaeological Expedition, co-directed by experts from Pisa University and Sultan Qaboos University, has revealed a previously unknown archaeological landscape that spans thousands of years. This extensive research showcases Oman’s multifaceted history, enhances our understanding of ancient social structures, and contributes to ongoing preservation efforts.

The local community plays an essential role in heritage preservation as well. Initiatives such as the restoration of Haret Al-Aqr and Misfat Al-Abriyeen demonstrate how cultural heritage can drive local economic development and attract tourism while providing opportunities to local artisans.

Economic Partnerships and Tourism

In addition to cultural preservation, Italy and Oman have explored avenues for economic collaboration. The burgeoning tourism sector in Oman presents an opportunity for Italian companies that specialize in sustainable tourism development and cultural heritage management. By leveraging Italy's expertise in tourism, Oman aims to attract more visitors interested in its rich history and beautiful landscapes, creating a sustainable economic model while sharing its cultural treasures.

Collaborative projects have also emerged in the areas of architecture and design, where Italian designers are engaged in fostering Omani architectural projects, reflecting both traditional Omani styles and modern influences. This blend of innovation and tradition exemplifies the growth of the partnership and its vision for the future.

As the symposium concluded, both Omani and Italian representatives reaffirmed their commitment to cultural preservation, emphasizing sustainable tourism and educational strategies to benefit future generations. Prof. Marco Ramazzotti from Sapienza University noted the development of a multi-millennial natural and archaeological park in Oman to protect and share remarkable finds, aiming to elevate the global profile of Oman’s historical landscapes.

The collaborative efforts of the Embassy of Italy and local institutions create enriching experiences that celebrate the profound impact of language, literature, and heritage. As Oman continues to gain international attention for its innovative approach to cultural preservation, the partnership with Italy highlights a shared responsibility to safeguard history and promote mutual growth for generations to come.
