Oman celebrates Arab Environment Day

Muscat: October 14th is dedicated each year as Arab Environment Day by the Arab League, with this year's theme being 'Land Restoration for Enhanced Resilience.' The Sultanate of Oman, represented by the Environment Authority (EA), joined other countries in highlighting efforts and projects aimed at reducing land degradation and rehabilitating vegetation cover.
Some of Oman's key initiatives include a national project to plant 10 million wild trees, the establishment of nurseries for propagating wild trees, a project to map land degradation, and the development of a National Plan to Combat Drought in collaboration with the Arab Organization for Agricultural Development.

During a recent meeting in Cairo, the Arab League warned about the negative impacts of ongoing natural resource depletion and land degradation on food security and stability in the region. The Arab League noted that 90 per cent of Arab countries' land is classified as dry or extremely dry, making it highly prone to desertification.
Ambassador Dr Ali bin Ibrahim al Malki, Assistant Secretary-General and Head of the Economic Affairs Sector at the Arab League, emphasised the importance of regional cooperation in addressing these issues. The focus is on adhering to environmental treaties and promoting sustainable development initiatives.
The event brought together experts from Arab nations, international organisations, and civil society to discuss efforts to combat desertification, enhance resilience to drought, and implement sustainable environmental practices.
