Solar energy projects in the Sultanate of Oman are witnessing a significant expansion as part of the country’s efforts to diversify energy sources and raise the contribution of renewable energy in the national electricity mix to 30 per cent by 2030 and 39 per cent by 2040.

The use of solar energy instead of traditional energy sources contributes to reducing carbon emissions and maintaining air quality. The resources saved can then be used for other uses of higher value that will enhance the national development process, provide job opportunities for local cadres, add new industries and sectors, and drive economic diversification.

The International Energy Agency data indicated that the Sultanate of Oman's electricity consumption is expected to increase by 2.6 per cent annually during the period from 2022 to 2025, compared to 8 per cent in 2021. This came to meet the high demand for electricity while reducing reliance on gas, as the Sultanate plans to add 1.9 gigawatts of renewable energy by 2026.

The Sultanate also aims in Oman Vision 2040 for solar energy consumption to reach an estimated 30 per cent by 2040. It aims, through this trend in the transition to the use of renewable energy, to enhance energy security for a sustainable future and achieve a balance between the requirements of sustainable development and the optimal use of natural resources for the growth of the national economy and reducing the effects of climate change.

The Oman government continues to launch its renewable initiatives at all times, and in this context, Oman launched the 'Green Mosque' programme through several concerned Omani entities specialised in energy.

The programme converts a mosque into an environmentally friendly building that operates on solar energy, and the project works to reduce the consumption of electricity to a rate of up to 100 per cent.

By positioning a clean energy generation system in a group of mosques of various sizes and areas, the initiative comes in line with Oman Vision 2040 and the global trend towards establishing green buildings by adopting the approach of transitioning to a green economy in development projects.
