Muscat, Sept 8

Khalfan al Naabi, representing Nizwa Club, has been made the President of the Oman Basketball Association (OBA) for a four-year from 2024 till 2028. He received 6 votes, compared to 3 votes for his competitor Asaad al Hosani.

Additionally, Abu Bakr Al Jahwari, representing Oman Club, earned the trust of the General Assembly with 6 votes, electing him as Vice President of the Association.

For the mandatory women's seat, Hiba al Naabiya won with 7 votes. The General Assembly also endorsed the council members Ahmed al Routani, Alaa al Hadhrami, and Salem Al Yafie.

The meeting of the General Assembly of the Oman Basketball Association (OBA) began with a speech by Engineer Khalfan Al Naabi, the newly re-elected President of the Association, in which he expressed his deep appreciation for the significant role played by the clubs in supporting the OBA and the fruitful cooperation that extended throughout the 2021-2024 board of directors.

Al Naabi emphasised the support played a crucial role in developing the performance of the Association and implementing its annual programs according to the established plans.

Al Naabi also added, 'We have worked as a united team during the past period, focusing on improving performance based on available resources. We succeeded in some areas, while others require more time to achieve the desired results, reflecting the nature of sports work.'

He thanked the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Youth, represented by His Highness Sayyid Theyazin bin Haitham bin Tariq, the Minister of Culture, Sports, and Youth, for the great support the ministry provides to various sports federations.

Al Naabi elected for second term

Following this, the election committee called on representatives from the nine clubs eligible to attend the meeting and participate in the election. These clubs included Ahli Sidab, Al Seeb, Oman, Al Bashayr, Qurayat, Salalah, Nizwa, Dhofar, and Al Suwaiq, to elect candidates for the positions of President, Vice President, and the women's seat, while other members were endorsed by default due to only three candidates running for these positions.

After the election process concluded, Khalfan Al Naabi, who was re-elected as President of the OBA for a second term, expressed his gratitude for the efforts made during the previous period, noting that it was filled with progress and achievement.

He added, 'the past period was full of accomplishments. We were able to work on several key areas, most notably the development of youth levels, which represent the future of basketball in Oman, in addition to supporting the women's sector, which achieved success both locally and at the Gulf level. We also focused on developing technical staff, including referees and coaches, which are essential factors for continued development and achieving the aspirations of basketball enthusiasts in Oman.'

Regarding the presence of only nine clubs at the General Assembly meeting, Al Naabi clarified that the Association had successfully attracted new clubs to practice basketball and participate in the youth league and the general league. He added that the system would allow these clubs to participate in the General Assembly in the upcoming periods, pointing out that increasing the number of clubs participating in the league is one of the main goals the Association aims to achieve.

Abu Bakr Al Jahwari, the newly elected Vice President of the Association, stated, 'I started my journey as a player, then a coach, and finally as a board member, giving me a comprehensive understanding of the challenges and difficulties facing the sport. We will work hard to develop basketball and achieve tangible progress in the upcoming period.'

In the same context, Hiba Al Naabiya, who was elected to the women's seat, said, 'In previous periods, we worked on building strategic partnerships with the International Basketball Federation, which contributed to the allocation of special programmes for women's basketball in Oman. We also established fixed tournaments for this sport. In the coming period, we will work on creating women's basketball leagues and developing a strategic plan to promote women's sports in collaboration with the School Sports Association and relevant entities to advance women's sports.'
