Muscat, Sept 5

The Ministry of Culture, Sport and Youth (MoCSY) represented by national team support campaign 'We all with you' organised for the first time a special trip for the national team fans, as the Oman delegation coordinated with the organisers to sure the facilitate of fans entry and exit from the stadium, where Omani fans were given special gate (No 14).

The Oman embassy in Baghdad had issued a statement on Iraqi government exempting fans from entry visa fees to Iraq for those coming by land and air to Basra from September 2 to 5.

Basra International Stadium, built in a shape of Palm tree, was opened in 2013, and hosted the 25th Arabian Gulf Cup in 2023. This will be Oman's third appearance in the stadium after playing the opening and final matches of the Gulf 25 with 65,000 spectators.

The Basra stadium ranks third in Asia after Seoul World Cup Stadium (68,000) in South Korea and Gelora Bung Kuanu Stadium (77,000).

The Iraqi fans were given 92 per cent tickets out of 65,000 spectators, while the visiting Omani fans were given 8 per cent, according to the Fifa regulations.

This was Oman's 50th match in the World Cup Qualifiers. Oman began their campaign in 1986 against the UAE and played their first match against Iraq in Baghdad in 1993 Qualifiers for World Cup 1994.

In the last 49 matches, Oman won 17, drew 12 and lost 20 matches. They scored 60 goals and conceded 58. The biggest win was against Chinese Taipei 7-1 in the 1994 qualifiers, and the win against Nepal 6-0 in Tokyo in the 1998 qualifiers. The biggest loss was against Uzbekistan 5-0 in Tashkent in the final stage of the 2002 qualifiers.

Omani player, Imad al Hosni is the second highest scorer in history after Hani al Dabbat. Imad is the only Omani player who scored in three different qualifiers in India and Singapore in the 2006 qualifiers, and in Yangon in the 2014 qualifiers. Al Munther al Alawi also has four goals in the past qualifiers. In addition, four players scored three goals in the World Cup qualifiers, Ahmed Ali, Ahmed Mubarak ‘Kanu’, Mohammed bin Mubarak al Hanai and Khalid bin Khalifa al Hajri.

The Iraq team played its first match in the final stage of the World Cup qualifiers on home ground after an absence of more than 20 years due to the international ban.

Iraq played their last home match for World Cup qualifiers in 2001 for the 2002 World Cup, and first official match at Basra International Stadium was against Hong Kong in 2019 for the 2022 World Cup.
