Oman-UK virtual meeting focuses on trade and investment cooperation

MUSCAT: Qais bin Mohammed al Yousef, Minister of Commerce, Industry, and Investment Promotion, held a virtual meeting on Wednesday, September 4, 2024, with Douglas Alexander, Minister of State for Trade Policy and Economic Security in the United Kingdom. The discussions focused on enhancing trade and investment cooperation between Oman and the UK.

During the meeting, Al-Yousef extended his congratulations to the UK minister on his recent appointment, expressing his best wishes for success in his new role. He also emphasized the strong ties of friendship and cooperation that unite Oman and the United Kingdom, and his hope for continued progress in these relations.

The meeting provided an opportunity to review the growth of bilateral trade and to discuss strategies for further increasing trade and investment between the two nations. Both sides reiterated their commitment to advancing the ongoing negotiations on a Free Trade Agreement between the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) and the United Kingdom. Additionally, they explored several areas of mutual interest that could benefit from closer collaboration.

Al Yousef underscored the United Kingdom's status as a strategic partner for Oman, noting the significant growth in economic ties between the two countries. He highlighted the importance of this partnership in realizing shared ambitions and enhancing bilateral cooperation across various sectors.

The discussions also touched on ways to bolster joint investment efforts, with both sides agreeing on the need to encourage direct investment in sectors and activities of mutual interest, in accordance with the laws and regulations of both nations.
