Muscat to Dhofar convoy sets off to promote EVs

Muscat: The first electric car convoy set off to Dhofar on Sunday as part of a joint initiative by the Ministry of Transport, Communications, and Information Technology (MTCIT) in cooperation with Dhofar Municipality, Asyad Group, Mwasalat, and the private sector.

The convoy includes 12 electric cars that will cover a journey extending 1,000 km from Muscat Governorate, passing through Al Dakhiliyah and Al Wusta Governorates, and reaching Dhofar Governorate. The campaign also aims to raise public awareness of the benefits of electric cars and encourage the transition to this more sustainable type of transportation.

The convoy will also be accompanied by an exhibition of electric cars in Dhofar Governorate from August 27-30 to promote sustainable, environment-friendly development and contribute to reducing carbon dioxide emissions.

Eng. Said bin Hamoud al Maawali, Minister of Transport, Communications, and Information Technology, said that the Sultanate of Oman wants to promote the use of electric cars and trucks across the governorates and plans to install 400 or 500 chargers within the next two years.

He added that there are plans to develop environment-friendly transportation in the coming years, which include promoting the use of electric cars as well as the ones that run on biofuel, which are currently being tested.

For electric cars, the plan is to expand the base of suppliers who can provide chargers at prices that are within reach of all categories of society.

The second plan is to work on the infrastructure by providing parking and charging places and working on appropriate pricing for these cars, laws, and specifications suitable for these cars.
