MUSCAT: As the new academic year begins, the Ministry of Higher Education, Research and Innovation organised an Orientation Meeting for International Scholarship Students. This annual event was crucial for guiding students through their upcoming educational journey abroad, offering them valuable insights into adapting to both academic and social environments in their host countries.
Studying abroad presents a significant opportunity for students to expand their knowledge and experience diverse cultures. However, the transition can be challenging, making the Orientation Meeting vital in preparing students for potential obstacles.
Hamad bin Khalfan al Harthi from the Scholarship Affairs Department emphasised the importance of the introductory session, which not only covers academic expectations, but also provides practical advice on daily life adjustments, cultural integration and time management. This year, the scholarship programme supports 550 students in fields such as medicine, education and engineering.
Al Harthi noted that the meeting also addressed various aspects of academic, societal, religious and legal concerns, preparing students and their guardians comprehensively.
Attendees, such as Sarah al Maamari, a scholarship student heading to the UK, found the session particularly beneficial. “The meeting clarified academic requirements and how to adjust to life in a new country, addressing all my questions about housing, studying and staying connected with my family,” she said.
Khalid al Balushi, who will be studying in the US, appreciated the sense of camaraderie. “Meeting other students going to the same country gave me confidence. The expert advice on cultural adaptation was extremely helpful,” he shared.
The experts also provided key advice on maximising the study abroad experience:
Good planning: Research the host country's academic and social environment, understand local laws and prepare for daily life.
Time management: Balance academic and social activities while ensuring time for rest and recreation.
Cultural openness: Embrace new cultures and avoid isolation. Engaging with international peers enriches the experience.
Maintaining family ties: Regular communication with family and friends can support students emotionally during their studies.
Overall, the Orientation Meeting was a crucial step in preparing students for their international educational adventure, offering them the tools and knowledge needed to navigate and thrive in their new environments.
