Over 27k students admitted to higher education institutions

Muscat: The Higher Education Admission Centre (HEAC) at the Ministry of Higher Education, Research and Innovation announced the admission of 27,178 students for the first sorting of the 2024/2025 academic year.

Ahmed bin Mohammed al Azri, Director-General of the HEAC, said that government’s higher education institutions accounted for 55.7 per cent of the total number of admitted students whereas internal scholarships and grants made up 42.2 per cent and external scholarships and grants 2.1 per cent.

After the admission of 27,178 students, a percentage of 5.5 of seats are available for competition while 6.5 per cent of seats remained vacant as the applicants did not meet the conditions due to the lack of a sufficient number of students meeting the conditions of admission, Al Azri said explaining that admission to for the professional competence certificate at vocational colleges will be in the second sorting in November.

The first sorting saw tough competition due to the large number of applicants with high rates with 10,054 students obtaining a general rate of 90 per cent and higher. This has led to an increase in the competitive rates for admission in the highly competitive and most in-demand specializations. The lowest competitive rate accepted in the general medicine major at Sultan Qaboos University for male students was 98.2 while the rate for female students was 99.25, Al Azri said. — ONA
