Inspection Unit at the forefront to regulate labour market

Muscat: The Inspection Unit, affiliated with Security and Safety Services, which was inaugurated in 2024 under an agreement signed with the Ministry of Labour, plays a crucial role in conducting inspection tasks, providing security support services, and managing and operating labour care centres associated with the Ministry of Labour.

Directives mandate that the Inspection Unit of the Security and Safety Institution conduct supervisory inspections to ensure compliance with government decisions regarding Omanisation percentages and prohibited professions for non-Omani workers.

Statistics show that the unit dealt with approximately 12,000 violating workers within eight months. More than 9,700 workers were deported to their home countries, while the remaining individuals were referred to the appropriate authorities.

Retired Brigadier General Said bin Sulaiman al Asmi, CEO of the Security and Safety Institution, confirmed that the Inspection Unit has the authority to close sites that repeatedly violate Omanisation regulations. He encouraged job-seeking youth to take advantage of Omanised professions and showcase their abilities in the labour market. He emphasised that Omanisation includes professions with high standards, contrary to common beliefs, and that the unit will continue to conduct inspections to ensure compliance with Omanisation policies.

Al Asmi stated that the Inspection Unit has judicial authority for some workers, granted by Royal Decree No 18/2024, enhancing the institution's ability to enforce the Labour Law and Omanisation regulations.

The unit provides security support during inspection campaigns, apprehending non-Omani workers violating the Labour Law, and managing labour care centres. The Inspection Unit currently operates in Muscat, Al Batinah North and Dhofar, with plans to expand to other governorates. The unit has prepared labour care centres with advanced technology and adheres to safety, health and security standards.

The Security and Safety Institution provides training for new recruits, holding specialised courses with relevant authorities. Brigadier General Al Asmi emphasised the importance of implementing management plans and programmes to achieve objectives outlined within the unit's duties and responsibilities.
