The Austrian Alps are renowned for their breathtaking beauty, featuring snow-capped peaks, glaciers, and picturesque alpine meadows. Trails are well-marked and maintained, leading hikers through charming alpine villages where they can experience local culture and hospitality. Many routes also pass historical and cultural landmarks, such as ancient castles and monasteries, adding a rich layer to the hiking experience.
Austria’s rich flora and fauna add to the allure, with hikers encountering unique plant species and wildlife like ibex, marmots, and eagles. The country’s well-developed infrastructure includes mountain huts offering shelter and refreshments, enhancing the overall experience.
Austria also offers all-season hiking opportunities, with winter trails for snowshoeing providing a different perspective on the landscape. The country’s commitment to sustainability ensures its natural beauty is preserved, while its wellness culture offers hikers relaxation in thermal baths and spas after their adventures. These elements make Austria a premier hiking destination.
Nestled in the majestic Zugspitze region of the Austrian Alps, Seebensee (1,657 meters) and Drachensee (1,874 meters) are two of the most breathtaking alpine lakes you will ever see. Located in the heart of Tirol, Austria, these lakes feature crystal-clear waters that glisten in the sunlight, framed by the snow-capped peaks of the Zugspitze, which rise majestically in the background. Seebensee’s glacial blue waters are surrounded by dense forests, lush meadows, and rugged mountain peaks, creating a serene and captivating atmosphere. Drachensee, also known as the “Dragon Lake,” is equally mesmerizing, with its deep blue-green waters and towering cliffs that ascend to 2,500 meters above sea level. The lake is ringed by rugged limestone peaks—pale in color and formidable in shape. Around Drachensee, dwarf-pine-covered slopes spill into its crystal-clear, teal waters, creating an impressive landscape shared only by the Coburger Hütte mountain refuge, perched above the lake.
Our journey began with a drive from Munich to the charming town of Ehrwald, Austria (a 2.5-hour trip), nestled on the German border. The 8-kilometer hike to Seebensee is an easy and enjoyable trek, perfect for families and those looking for a leisurely walk. For those seeking a challenge, a 250-meter vertical climb from Seebensee leads to Drachensee—a rewarding trek that will leave you breathless in many ways. At the summit, you’ll find another crystal-clear lake waiting to astonish you with its beauty, surrounded by mystical clouds. Depending on the season, you may even witness fresh snow atop the mountains.
To begin your adventure, head to the Ehrwalder Almbahn Talstation in the village of Ehrwald. From there, you have the option to take a cable car to the trailhead or embark on a walk up to it. Initially, you’ll pass two restaurants—Tirolerhaus and Gasthof Ehrwalder Alm—situated next to the mountain station. Continue past Gasthof Alpenglühn and follow the broad gravel road towards the southwest. After about 30 minutes, the path splits; you can either follow the gravel road or turn left onto the forest path, which is quieter and offers spectacular mountain views. The Seebenalm Hut is another 30-minute walk away, and from there, it’s only a brief (around 15 minutes) ascent to the stunning Seebensee. Take some time to relax on the benches and capture postcard-perfect photos with Zugspitze Mountain in the background before heading up to Drachensee.
Once at Seebensee, continuing to Coburger Hütte and Drachensee is a must. Follow the wide gravel path along the left side of Seebensee, and at its far end, you will see signposts indicating “Coburger Hütte.” It’s a strenuous 30-minute hike up to the hut on a narrow and steep path, which offers majestic views of Seebensee below. Coburger Hütte is located at the top, on the shores of Drachensee. Hikers can spend a night at this cozy refuge or simply enjoy the restaurant and return via the same route. It is best to book in advance if planning to stay overnight.
To enjoy longer days and milder weather, it is best to hike to the lakes between June and September. Hiking to Seebensee and Drachensee is a once-in-a-lifetime experience that every nature lover should embark on. The stunning beauty of these hidden gems in the heart of the Austrian Alps is unparalleled, and the sense of accomplishment upon reaching the top is incomparable. A cable car is also available at the start of the hike, which can save about 4 kilometers.
