MUSCAT: Technology has become fully integrated into many areas of life, raising questions about the benefits of its presence anywhere and anytime. Its ubiquitous presence in various institutions highlights its importance. This integration of technology elevates the level of protection beyond conventional measures, addressing security and work-related concerns.
Lieutenant Colonel Omair bin Abdulaziz al Rawahi, Director of the Security Police at the General-Directorate of Operations, emphasised the significance of surveillance cameras in providing self-security for buildings and facilities, especially those managed by specialised companies.
These cameras play a crucial role in preventing sabotage and aiding investigations by tracking crimes and identifying genetic clues.
He further explained that the type of cameras used in various models directly relates to interesting security issues and the discovery of crimes and associated facts.
The deployment of surveillance cameras has led to significant changes within internal and external teams, such as reducing the number of security personnel, which in turn lowers the costs of security protection.
This reduction helps mitigate risks like vandalism and theft. Additionally, surveillance cameras are invaluable in urgent situations, revealing details about the sites, surrounding factors, and assisting in rescue operations. They enable cost-effective measures and facilitate movement from one site to another.
Cameras and systems have become vital tools in investigations, providing data, evidence, and audiovisual materials that are crucial for supporting investigations, evidence delegation, and crime discovery. These tools also play a significant role in deterring crime and illegal activities. Surveillance cameras monitor movement and traffic, detect legal violations, and help study the causes and factors leading to traffic problems, thus supporting the design of improved solutions.
Lieutenant Colonel Omair al Rawahi highlighted that the technical specifications and security requirements for installing surveillance cameras vary based on the building, era, and site details. Important features include system height, night or thermal vision capabilities, and resilience to different climatic conditions. Users must be experienced and capable of quickly addressing any malfunctions, whether regular or minor.
He also noted the potential misuse of cameras for blackmail and bullying, emphasising that Omani laws, such as the Information Technology Crime Law and Royal Decree No (12/2011), criminalise violations of privacy and protect individuals' private lives.
