MUSCAT: A feasibility study on using Azolla as a raw material for fish feed in Oman has been launched through a significant initiative by the Zubair Enterprises Development Centre (Zubair EDC). This SME empowerment programme, part of The Zubair Corporation, has facilitated a landmark agreement between Tuhlub, a participant in its Direct Support Programme (DSP), and the Leaders Consultancies and Development Centre. This collaboration aims to explore the potential of Azolla in enhancing food security within the Sultanate.
Azolla, an aquatic fern and small leafed floating plant, is known for its high protein content, essential amino acids, and mineral richness. Its utilization in the feed industry offers several advantages, such as availability, cost-effectiveness, and sustainability. Azolla can serve as a valuable replacement for costly protein sources like fish oil and fish meal, depending on the feeding behaviors of the fish species.
This initiative underscores The Zubair Corporation's dedication to sustainability. The Zubair EDC has elevated standards for its DSP initiative, recognising members who demonstrate exceptional dedication and follow the centre's recommendations. Projects must exhibit strategic planning and in-depth feasibility studies, emphasising a commitment to best business practices supported by Zubair EDC.
Ali Shaker, Head of Business Development & Partnerships at Zubair EDC, stated, “This feasibility study agreement showcases our commitment to supporting DSP members in exploring innovative solutions that can boost food security in Oman. We are eager to see the study's outcomes and hope the Tuhlub project sets a precedent for sustainable initiatives, inspiring future generations toward innovative, sustainable business models aligned with Oman Vision 2040. We also extend our gratitude to Ominvest for their ongoing support of young entrepreneurs and sustainable business practices in Oman.'
Zubair EDC has been actively assisting Tuhlub in various business development areas, recently helping secure multiple research bodies for the comprehensive feasibility study on Azolla in fish feeding.
Zaher al Alawi, CEO of Tuhlub, said, “This feasibility study is a vital step in innovating sustainable practices in the fish feed industry. With Zubair EDC's support and the expertise of Leaders Consultancies and Development Centre, we are optimistic about discovering new methods to enhance food security in the Sultanate of Oman.'
Ominvest, the sponsor of the DSP's Tuhlub project, has a longstanding commitment to supporting youth and SMEs, fostering entrepreneurship, and achieving UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Waleed Nasser al Yarubi, Chief People, Corporate Communication and Sustainability Officer, remarked, 'We believe in the potential of our youth and the importance of supporting SMEs to drive innovation and economic growth. This feasibility study on Azolla-based fish feeding exemplifies our commitment to fostering sustainable and impactful ventures.'
Leaders Consultancies and Development Centre, known for extensive agricultural services, will execute the study. Their expertise in plant and animal production, farm management, and agricultural extension makes them well-suited for this critical research.
Eid al Shukaili, Manager of Leaders Consultancies and Development Centre, added, “We are excited to collaborate with Zubair EDC and Tuhlub on this groundbreaking feasibility study. Our experience positions us well to explore Azolla's viability as a sustainable fish feed component, potentially revolutionizing the industry.'
