Masirah dominate U-17 Badminton Championship

Talented players from Masirah grabbed the limelight at the National U-17 Badminton Championship after they claimed all three top awards in the tournament. Shihab al Hinai from the team managed to defeat his teammate Ziyad al Hinai 2-1 (20-22, 21-18, and 21-16) in the summit clash to win the title of the tournament.

Al Haitham al Hinai from Masirah and Qurayat player Abdulaziz al Hinai received the award of third place equally as the third and fourth playoff match was not played.

Ash Sharqiyah South-based team representatives played brilliantly all round in the one-day event to end their participation with high success. As many as seven clubs including Masirah, Oman Club, Saham, Qurayat, Sur, Bausher, and Salalah clubs took part in the championship which was organized by the Oman Racket Sports Committee (ORSC) and took place at the Oasis Badminton Academy in Ghala. The junior domestic Badminton tourney played on Friday to mark the World Badminton Day which falls on July 5 every year.



The winner Shihab al Hinai secured a slot in the final as he defeated Al Haitham al Hinai by 2-0 (21-14) and (21-19) in the semifinal while in quarters he managed to beat Abdulah Taher al Barawani 2-0 (21-11, 21-3).

Dr Abdulrahim bin Musallam al Droushi, Chairman of ORSC, congratulated Masirah youth players for their outstanding performance. “Our heartiest congratulations to Masriah Club for their impressive show in this youth Badminton championship beside Qurayat player who managed to win a third place alongside the winning team.

Recently, Masirah team won the title of the 2024 Oman Squash Club Championship. This is showing the club’s top efforts in the Racket Sports and this is a good opportunity to appreciate their hard work,” he said.



“Hosting of the junior Badminton Championship was in line with the World Badminton Day. Besides, ORSC organised some events and activities across the Sultanate of Oman. The launched Initiative 'Shuttlecock in Parks, Gardens, and Beaches' programme in last April extended its activities as this month Initiative took place in Ibra and Salalah on Friday as part of the World Badminton Day,” he said.

“One of the main purpose for the National U-17 Badminton Championship was to explore some new potential faces for national team formation as the team will represent the nation in abroad events in the forthcoming period,” ORSC chief concluded.

Ruqaya al Omairi, the board member of ORSC, said that the tournament featured very tough competition among the participating teams. “This event was a good chance for the coaching staff of all the teams to witness the progress of their players. The competitions heated up, especially in the finals rounds. The event will be followed with more tournaments in the coming months,” she said.
