National U17 Badminton Championship begins today

MUSCAT, JULY 4

Oman Racket Sports Committee (ORSC) is set to kick off the National U-17 Badminton Championship on Friday. The one day event will take place at the Oasis Badminton Academy in Ghala. Seven domestic clubs confirmed their attendance in the tournament including: Masirah, Oman Club, Saham, Qurayyat, Sur, Bausher and Salalah clubs. Organising of the junior domestic Badminton tourney on Friday is inline to the World Badminton Day which falls on July 5 every year.

The International Badminton Federation (IBF), as it is originally named now as (Badminton World Federation – BWF), was established on 05 July 1934 with nine founding Member Associations. In recognition of this significant date in badminton’s history, World Badminton Day will be celebrated annually on 05 July.

Beside the local Badminton championship, many other events and activities organized by ORSC across the Sultanate of Oman. ORSC Initiative titled under ' Shuttlecock in Parks, Gardens, and Beaches' program which will take place in Ibra and Salalah on Friday as part of the activities for World Badminton Day.

For the championship, the singles and team categories will be available in this edition of the tournament. It is expected the tournament will record tough contests among the clubs who will fight to lift the title.

In last May, ORSC had launched the opening edition of the Oman Club Badminton Championship. Oman club’s duo Akram al Haji and Toshar Kumar had managed to beat Bousher’s pair comprised from Khalil al Darmaki and Mashiri Fashorsi 2-0 (21-18, 23-21) to claim the title of Men’s double event. Oman club players showed an outstanding performance in the final to claim the trophy.

At the Men’s singles event, Masirah’s club Salim al Maqbali managed to lift the title after he edged Sultan al Shibani from Al Kamil Wal Wafi club 2-0 (21-16, 21-10) in the final clash summit to crown champions of this category. In the U-15 singles boys event, the potential player Zaid al Hinai from Masirah club bagged the gold medal and won the trophy of the first place as he managed to register a 2-0 win over his opponent Abdul Aziz al Hinai from Masirah club 21-16 and 21-15.
