Ibri: Ibri Hospital has successfully performed the first corneal fixation operation for a young man suffering from keratoconus. Corneal fixation operation is a procedure that helps prevent the condition from worsening in the future.

Dr Nawal bint Shuwaird al Yaqoubiyah, a specialist in the Ophthalmology Clinic Department at Ibri Reference Hospital, explained that the corneal fixation operation that was performed prevents the disease from developing by increasing collagen bonds in the cornea and exposing the eye to ultraviolet rays and riboflavin (vitamin B2). The operation usually takes between half and an hour depending on the patient’s condition and is performed under local anesthesia for early and simple cases but it takes longer in end-stage condition. Patients who undergo this type of operation have 80 to 90 per cent chance of preventing further complications.

Al Yaqoubiyah noted that Keratoconus is a disease that affects the cornea causing it to become weak and giving it a conical shape. It causes gradual loss of vision over time. The disease usually begins in adolescence and ceases developing in the mid-thirties in many cases. The symptoms include blurred vision, double vision, extreme sensitivity to light, poor night vision and frequent changes in eyeglass sizes.
