MUSCAT: Exports of minerals from the Sultanate of Oman climbed 9% to reach 40 million tonnes in 2023 versus corresponding figures for 2022, the Ministry of Energy and Minerals stated in its 2023 Annual Report.

The export of construction material exports climbed 4% from 19.868 million tonnes in 2022 to 20.673 million tonnes in 2023. Gypsum ore exports increased 11% from 10.575 million tonnes in 2022 to 11.713 million tonnes in 2023. While construction materials made up 52% of total exports, gypsum accounted for a 29% share. These data demonstrate the strategic relevance of these commodities in Oman's export portfolio.

Exports of laterite surged to 789,000 tonnes in 2023, up from 169,000 tonnes in 2022. Limestone exports climbed to 4.957 million tonnes from 4.139 million tonnes in 2022. Exports of marble were boosted to 407,000 tonnes in 2023, up from 375,000 tonnes a year earlier. Chrome exports spiked to 377,000 tonnes, from 213,000 tonnes in 2022. Exports of dolomite, however, dipped to 1.036 million tonnes in 2023, down from 1.171 million tonnes a year earlier.

However, the total production of mineral ores during 2023 amounted to about 70.4 million tonnes, a decrease of 7% compared to 2022. The production of building materials decreased by about 9 million, 58% of the total production. “These declines are due to the delay of mining companies' submission of their monthly production reports,” the Ministry noted in its report.

Revenues from mineral sales amounted to RO 113 million in 2023, represented a 2% dip from the previous year’s tally. “This is attributable to a decrease in the volume of sales of building materials by RO 9.1 million (24% compared to last year). On the other hand, the value of the sales of limestone, gypsum and chrome increased by RO 6.8 million,” the Ministry said.
