MUSCAT: In a significant achievement for the water infrastructure sector, GS Inima announced that the Barka V desalination plant has successfully completed its Desalination Plant Reliability Test Run, including the final Performance Test, nine days ahead of the contractual schedule. The plant demonstrated its ability to meet the total contracted water capacity of 105,000 metres³ per day, marking a pivotal milestone for the project.

Situated in South Al Batinah Governorate, the Barka V desalination plant will yield 100,000 metres³ per day of premium drinking water, benefiting approximately 800,000 residents in these densely populated regions. This development is poised to significantly enhance the water supply in these areas, ensuring a steady and reliable source of potable water.

The Barka V Independent Water Project (IWP), designed to produce 100,000 cubic metres³ per day (equivalent to 22 million imperial gallons per day), is spearheaded by GS Inima Barka V Desalination Co SAOC, a subsidiary of the Spanish multinational water infrastructure firm GS Inima Environment. Headquartered in Madrid, GS Inima Environment was chosen by Oman’s Nama Power and Water Procurement Company (PWP) to implement the project under a Build-Own-Operate (BOO) model. This model encompasses a 20-year operational period starting from mid-2024.



The total investment for the Barka V IWP is estimated at around $138 million. This project is the fifth in a series of phased water projects located in a cluster at Barka in Al Batinah South Governorate. Utilizing advanced reverse osmosis (RO) technology, the Barka V plant will replace older, less efficient desalination plants that were previously integrated with power generation units.

The successful early completion of the reliability test run not only underscores GS Inima’s commitment to operational excellence but also highlights the company’s capability in delivering critical infrastructure projects ahead of schedule. This achievement is expected to bolster GS Inima’s reputation in the global water infrastructure sector and demonstrate its proficiency in managing large-scale projects in challenging environments.
