MUSCAT: Amouage, the luxury fragrance house based in the Sultanate of Oman, has once again solidified its reputation in the world of high-end perfumes. The brand's Guidance Eau de Parfum has been awarded Best Niche Perfume by an Independent Brand at the Fragrance Foundation France Awards. This accolade highlights Amouage's commitment to craftsmanship, creativity, and transparency, distinguishing it in the competitive niche perfume market.
Renaud Salmon, Chief Creative Officer at Amouage, expressed his gratitude through a recent post, emphasising the significance of this recognition. He described Guidance Eau de Parfum as an 'icon in the making' that encapsulates what Amouage proudly stands for. The award-winning fragrance is a testament to the brand's dedication to meticulous craftsmanship. Each bottle of Guidance Eau de Parfum is hand-crafted in Amouage's Muscat manufacture.
In an interview with Observer, Salmon explained, 'Every Amouage Guidance Eau de Parfum, like all Amouage fragrances, is manufactured manually in the Amouage Manufacture in Muscat. Our skilled craftswomen and craftsmen master each step of the assembly, whether it is blending the fragrance according to precise proportions, controlling the aging process patiently, or gluing our iconic emblem by hand; a step that does not allow for the smallest misalignment. This is where craft meets art.'
The process involves a high concentration of pure perfume oils, with each bottle containing 25% of these precious oils. The perfume is aged for a total of four weeks, including three weeks of maturation and one week of maceration, ensuring a rich and refined olfactory experience.
'Each Amouage fragrance requires a precise aging process, between four weeks and six months depending on the formula,' Salmon added. 'For Guidance specifically, the relatively short aging time guarantees that the fragile, vibrant top notes of the composition are preserved while smoothening the woody base and guaranteeing an unmatched long-lastingness and sillage'.
Salmon also highlighted the contemporary creativity and art direction that went into the creation of Guidance Eau de Parfum. The fragrance was born from the pure olfactive vision of Quentin Bisch from Givaudan, a renowned name in the fragrance industry. The aesthetic elements, including the bottle design, were elevated by Louise Mertens, whose artistic direction adds a modern and sophisticated touch to the product.
Transparency is another cornerstone of Amouage’s philosophy. The brand prides itself on being open about its processes, inviting the public to witness the creation of its perfumes firsthand. 'The perfume industry has long relied on the notions of mystique and dream to justify a certain level of opacity,' Salmon noted.
'While magic and creative stories need to remain a significant component of what we do at Amouage, our clients now expect more transparency about what they acquire and wear every day. Particularly from a high perfumery house as some creations can represent a significant investment. Embracing this need gives us the opportunity to reinforce the relationship with our community of perfume lovers. And ultimately, if clients become more educated about perfumery, they will make better, informed decisions and opt for superior perfumes.'
The doors of their Muscat manufacture are open to visitors five days a week, allowing them to experience the artistry and craftsmanship that go into each bottle. For those unable to visit in person, Amouage offers a virtual glimpse through its active social media platforms, website, and global network of perfume experts.
Looking ahead, Salmon is determined to continue innovating and maintaining the high standards of craftsmanship and creativity that have brought Amouage such prestigious accolades. 'As the appeal for Amouage creations grows around the world, it is of utmost importance to elevate our standards even further,' he said.
'The older generation of craftsmen is training a significant number of younger employees to meet the growing demand. From a creative point of view, the Sultanate Oman is currently enjoying an explosion of Omani talents that will contribute to shaping the future of the house, together with global artists. This unique fusion of local and international has characterised Amouage for the past four decades and is definitely there to stay,' Salmon concluded.
