MUSCAT: Al Hajar Mountains and surrounding areas on Saturday received thundery downpours of varying intensity ranging between 15 to 35 mm accompanied by downdraft winds and hailstones as a result of local cloud formation. The heavy rainfall caused wadis to flow and reduced horizontal visibility.
The meteorology department said there are chances of cumulonimbus clouds forming over Al Hajar Mountains in the afternoon over the coming days.
Thunderstorms associated with active downdraft winds are expected to continue.
Parts of the governorates of Al Batinah North, Al Batinah South, Al Dakhiliyah, Al Dhahirah, Al Buraimi, Muscat, Al Wusta, Al Sharqiyah North and Al Sharqiyah South witnessed extensive formations of thunderstorms which led to heavy rains.
A number of wilayats in Dhofar Governorate witnessed scattered rainfall concentrated on the coastal area where rain and intermittent drizzle are expected to continue.
The Wilayat of Rakhyout recorded the highest rainfall amount with 59 mm over the period from June 5 to 7, according to the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources. The Wilayat of Mirbat recorded 28 mm of rainfall, Bidiyah 19 mm and Ibra 12 mm.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources is discharging an approximately 15 million cubic metres of water from Wadi Dayqah Dam starting from today until June 23 to feed the groundwater reservoir in the Daghmar and Hail Al Ghaf areas in the Wilayat of Qurayat.
Al Rustaq received around 35 mm of rainfall on Saturday, followed by Yanqul (30 mm) and Ibri (25 mm).
No untoward incidents were reported due to rains and flowing wadis.
Heavy rains have been reported from Suhar, Jaalan Bani Bu Hassan and Wadi Al Madam in the Wilayat of Al Hamra, while the flowing Wadi Bani Ghafir saw disruption in road traffic between Al Rustaq and Ibri.
The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has warned of thunderstorm clouds accompanied by varying intensity (15–35 mm) rains on Saturday.
