Al Mulham, Azza clinch 100m gold, silver in West Asian Athletics

MUSCAT, May 30

Young Omani sprinter Al Mulham bin Darwish al Balushi claimed the gold medal in the men’s 100 metres sprint on opening day of the West Asian Athletics Championship which began in Iraq, Basra city on Wednesday.

Al Balushi managed to register a timing of 10:25 seconds to clinch the gold while Saudi’s runner Nasser Mahmoud claimed silver with a timing of 10:27 seconds. Qatari s printer Tosin Ogunode finished in third place after clocking 10:32 seconds.

The Sultanate of Oman’s runner Azza al Yaarubi managed to earn silver medal in women’s 100 metres after she clocked 12.01 seconds. The gold medal went to Dana Abdul Razaq from Iraq as she completed the distance within a timing of 11.80 seconds while Hibah Mohammed from Saudi Arabia claimed bronze with a timing of 12:24 seconds.

Oman’s Mazoon al Alawi finished in sixth place after she registered a timing of 12:01 seconds.

The West Asia Athletics Championship started in Basra city on Wednesday and will run until Saturday. As many as 14 countries are taking part in the championship including Iran team for the first time. This event is very crucial as it acts as qualifier to the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris for West Asian zone.



Oman’s delegation comprised 15 athletes including Barakat al Harthy, Ali al Balushi, Mubeen al Kindi, Mohammed al Saadi, Khalid al Ghailani, Hamza al Jabri, Al Mulham al Balushi, Salim al Rawahi, Hana al Qasmi, Azza al Yaarubi, Mazoon al Alawi, Alaa al Zadjali, Duha al Sinwai, Azza al Hinai and Hiba al Asmi. Hamdan al Bousheri, Treasurer of Oman Athletics Association (OAA), headed the delegation besides attendance of Khalfan al Waeli, board member of OAA and board member of West Asian Federation.
