Muscat: As World Environment Day is celebrated on Thursday, the Environment Authority (EA) has called for a sustainable environment that is protected by everyone.
The Sultanate of Oman is an important nesting site for sea turtles in the world with more than 30,000 turtles nestling on Masirah Island per year, the most important of which are the green turtles and the Rayman 3.
Four species of turtles out of seven species in the world nest on the beaches of Masirah Island in the South al Sharqiyah Governorate.
The Sultanate has several turtle protection programs including registration and numbering of sea turtles.
The global importance of Oman to the survival of sea turtles has been established through surveys and research conducted since the 1970s, including regular beach surveys on Masirah Island to record and monitor population trends, nesting activity, and threats to nesting turtles, implementing initiatives designed to mitigate threats to the sea turtle population nesting on Masirah, advocating changes at the local and government level that will support sea turtle conservation and increasing education, community engagement and support for wider sea turtle awareness across Oman.
