Manchester, May 16

Despite their 3-2 defeat by Manchester United, Newcastle could still qualify for a place in Europa League going into their last game of the season this week.

With United, currently in eighth place in the Premier League, their manager Erik ten Hag has been under pressure amid inevitable rumours that he may have to depart. However, with his team in the FA Cup final, later this month, a victory may yet see him remain in-charge. Hampered by injuries this season, Ten Hag has spoken on better times ahead with promising young players and there could well be more buoyant times ahead for his side.

Needing to end the season well, United looked keen and determined with their young players showing maturity and the know-how of seniority. They went into the lead in the 31st minute when Sofyan Amrabat, on loan at Old Trafford, passed to Amad Diallo who then found Kobbie Mainoo unmarked in the centre of the box and the 18-year-old had the time to pick his spot to score.

Newcastle then had a penalty appeal turned down. Replays showed that Amrabat’s foot had caught Gordon just above the ankle but referee Rob Jones did not see it as a foul and it wasn’t even looked at by VAR. Premier League will be voting to see if VAR should be in use next season as it has become an increasingly contentious issue. There is such a divided opinion as to its use and accuracy.

The equaliser for the visitors came just four minutes into the second half. It was the result of a move of real purpose from Newcastle and it exposed the United defence as Anthony Gordon volleyed in an excellent pass from Jacob Murphy on the right flank. Gordon, with his fast-paced moves and creativity had looked dangerous to United.

He could have helped Newcastle to a second goal with an expert pass to Alexander Isak but Amrabat just managed to slide in to deflect the ball over the bar. It didn’t take long, however, for the home side to grab the lead again.

It followed a curling corner kick by Bruno Fernandes from which a header from Murphy went to 19-year-old Diallo who firmly drove his shot home. Soon after that United decided to make a substitution in the 82nd minute, bringing on their 64 million buy Rasmus Hojlund to replace Daillo.

The decision paid off as the Dane found the net in the 84th minute. He received a pass from Fernandes and sped his way passing wide of two defenders and shooting just inside the goalkeeper’s right-hand post.

At 3-1 the game was looking beyond Newcastle but they continued to attack with the clock ticking and eventually got a second goal with Lewis Hall putting in a lovely curling strike two minutes into injury time and United managed to hold on for a tense finish to their last home match of the season.
