Muscat: The Oman Chamber of Commerce and Industry (OCCI) celebrated its 50th anniversary (Golden Jubilee) in a grand ceremony held under the patronage of His Highness Sayyid Dhi Yazan bin Haitham Al Said, Minister of Culture, Sports and Youth.
The ceremony commenced with opening remarks by Shaikh Faisal bin Abdullah al Rawas, Chairman of OCCI's Board of Directors. He welcomed the guests before tracing the Chamber's roots back to 1973, when it was established as a cornerstone of Oman's economic system, drawing inspiration from the nation's millennia-long tradition of trade.
'Since time immemorial,' Al Rawas elaborated, 'Omani ships have traversed vast seas, while camels laden with commercial goods have ventured across expansive horizons. These journeys embodied Oman's commitment to tolerance, peace, and coexistence among nations.' Al Rawas underscored the Chamber's immense pride in receiving His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik’s recognition of its vital role in propelling the national economy. He described this commendation as 'a testament, an honour, and a duty' that will guide the Chamber in its pursuit of Oman Vision 2040. This national roadmap emphasizes building a competitive economic infrastructure, achieving clear and robust economic leadership, and maintaining a legislative system that adapts seamlessly to future transformations, he noted.
Al Rawas emphasized the pivotal role envisioned for the private sector under Oman Vision 2040, a vision that the current Board of Directors actively embraces. He outlined the Chamber's strategic directions, focusing on its role as the official representative of the private sector. These directions prioritize improving the business environment, fostering economic development across the governorates, and driving economic diversification. Additionally, the Chamber remains committed to establishing strong governance principles, enhancing the internal business environment, and achieving successful digital transformation, he said.
The ceremony not only celebrated the OCCI's golden jubilee but also marked the launch of a new visual identity for the chamber. More significantly, it witnessed the announcement of two crucial initiatives designed to bolster Oman's economic development. The establishment of the Social Investment Center promises to transform impactful social programs and projects into sustainable ventures capable of generating lasting growth.
Furthermore, the Center for Economic Studies and Research will function as a hub for expertise and research, offering valuable insights across various economic and commercial fields. These initiatives demonstrate the OCCI's unwavering commitment to adapting to contemporary needs and ensuring its continued relevance in the years to come.
The 50th anniversary celebration served as a resounding success, reaffirming the OCCI's dedication to spearheading Oman's journey towards economic prosperity. The event's rich tapestry – a celebration of Oman's trade heritage, a reflection on the Chamber's past contributions, and a resolute commitment to its future role – paints a vibrant picture of a progressive institution poised to lead Oman's economic landscape for decades to come.
