MUSCAT: The Oman Expatriate Volleyball Association is gearing up for their 10th edition of women’s tournament on June 7.
Medals and prize money are on offer for top places in the open volleyball tournament to be held at the Strike Sports Centre near Oman Automobile Association from 9 am to 6 pm.
The 2024 edition will see 16 teams in action for the top honours in the one-day tournament.
The 10th anniversary edition is planned to be a special one, said Khalid al Balushi, chief organiser of the tournament and founder of Oman Expatriates Volleyball Association.
“The Oman Expatriate Volleyball Association has come a long way. We started in 2014 with six teams at the outdoor courts in Al Ghubra lake park. From 2016, we started indoor matches,” Khalid said.
“Now we have more than 20 expatriate volleyball teams playing in Muscat. We (Oman Expatriate Volleyball Association) are the first organisation who started volleyball in Muscat for expatriates.”
“At present, we have almost 400 to 500 expatriates playing and participating in our sports activity,” Khalid added.
A significant number of Omani women players make their presence in the different teams, he said.
“Several local women players are in the participating teams and this gives good boost to the local women’s volleyball too,” Khalid concluded.
