MUSCAT, MAY 5
The Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology (MoTCIT) has announced the launch of a space entrepreneurship programme.
According to the Ministry, the training course which will take place during June 9 - 13, will primarily aim to enhance space project management skills, and introduce SMEs and individuals to space entrepreneurship.
The training course will cover several major topics including technical aspects of space projects, entrepreneurship in the field of space and business models, planning and executing projects, space project management and the future of space exploration.
The programme is open to local startups, SMES, government employees and job seekers.
The course is part of a larger initiative launched by the Ministry and local tech company Code Academy, to build local space sector capacities, following the guidelines of the newly issued National Executive Space Programme.
Earlier editions of the programme included a training course on utilising cloud computing-based Earth observation data in disaster management programs, as well as Artificial Intelligence and deep learning in the field of spatial mapping.
Earlier this year, the Under-Secretary of Communications and IT at the Ministry, Dr Ali al Shidhani, revealed that Oman attracted over RO 20 million worth of investments in the space sector within the last two years.
It is worth noting that the Executive Space Programme is part of a larger effort to enhance the digital economy in Oman, which currently contributes 2% to the local GDP. The programme aims to increase this figure to 5% by 2030, and 10% by 2040.
