Abalone, known as one of the world's most expensive seafood, is prized for its rich and flavorful meat. Omani Abalone, known for its unique taste and texture is a celebrated delicacy because of its softer texture and distinctive golden hue making it very different from its Australian or South African counterparts.
Locally known as As'sufailah, the Omani abalone has sustained traditional fishing communities, finding its way to markets in Yemen, India, and more recently, China.
For centuries, Omani fishermen and women have skillfully harvested abalone along the Dhofar coast. Using traditional wetsuits and without breathing apparatus, they expertly dive into shallow waters, scouring the seabed for these prized gastropods clinging to rocks.
Decades of intense fishing and unsustainable practices have led to a decline in wild abalone stocks. Recognizing the need for conservation and sustainable utilization, Oman Aquaculture Company LLC (OAC) was established in 2012 through a joint venture partnership between Muscat Overseas Group and Abagold Limited of South Africa. OAC aims to tap into Oman's marine resources by implementing land-based commercial aquaculture operations specifically for cultivating Omani Abalone.

The rise of commercial abalone farming
With the escalating demand for abalone, notably in Far East markets, both international and local investors have delved into the prospect of commercial abalone farming. Facilitating these endeavours, the Implementation Support & Follow-up Unit (ISFU) of the Diwan of Royal Court—a distinguished committee—is committed to streamlining the approval and permitting processes for investments. ISFU focuses on expediting projects and initiatives geared towards propelling Oman's economic diversification efforts.
OAC reported that the 'first of two abalone farming projects initiated last year in the Governorate is due to produce its maiden harvest this year. Oman Aquaculture Company, set up by Al Jazeera Investments at a cost of around RO 5.7 million, will celebrate this year the harvest of its first crop of ‘Golden Abalone’ (Haliotis Mariae) from its newly established farm in Mirbat.'
'The Mirbat project represents a successful effort to commercially produce Golden Abalone, a high-value locally occurring species that is billed as one of the highest quality and most valuable species of abalone in the world. Together with a similar venture under development at Sharbathat (Wilayat of Shaleem al Al Halaniyat Islands), the projects are aimed at sustaining the farming of Omani abalone for local consumption and export as well,' OAC reported
With the full assistance of ISFU, the abalone commercial farms are projected to produce around 450 tons of farmed abalone per year at their full capacity.
