MUSCAT: The International Conference on Nuclear Radiotherapy saw over 150 physicians and allied medical professionals from both within and outside the Sultanate of Oman taking part. The conference, aimed to delve into the forefront of scientific advancements in nuclear radiation therapy.

Dr Imad bin Shannoun Al Tamimi, a consultant physician in nuclear medicine and head of the Scientific Committee of the International Conference on Nuclear Radiotherapy (ICRT), emphasised that the event seeks to explore and deliberate on the latest scientific progress in the field, focusing on mechanisms and methods for enhancing nuclear radiation therapy.

Dr. Al Tamimi revealed that the conference agenda includes over 40 presentations across nine scientific sessions, featuring an esteemed group of international lecturers.

Nuclear radiation therapy, a relatively recent addition to medical practices, is dedicated to treating and managing cancerous diseases while mitigating complications compared to traditional chemotherapy. He underscored that the conference represents a significant contribution to raising awareness about the importance of this treatment method, promoting its dissemination in the Sultanate of Oman, and educating healthcare professionals on the latest developments in the field.

One notable presentation was delivered by Dr Ajit Bade Oyvind S Broland from Norway, who shared insights from joint research published in the Frontiers newspaper. The lecture, titled 'Using Radioactive Elements with Targeted Alpha Particles to Treat Tumors,' highlighted innovative approaches in the application of nuclear radiation for therapeutic purposes.

The conference also featured the presentation of lifetime achievement awards to distinguished medical professionals in the field of nuclear medicine from Oman, acknowledging their substantial contributions to the development of nuclear medicine.

The opening ceremony of the conference was sponsored by Dr Saeed bin Hareb Al Lamki, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Health for Health Affairs. Alongside the conference, an exhibition showcased various aspects of nuclear radiation treatments, including posters and brochures from participating entities.

Organised by the Ministry of Health, represented by the General Directorate of Health Services of Dhofar Governorate and Sultan Qaboos Hospital in Salalah, the conference received collaborative support from the International Association for Pharmaceutical and Molecular Therapy, Sultan Qaboos University Hospital, the Sultan Qaboos Integrated Center for Cancer Treatment and Research, and the Medical City for Military and Security Services. - ONA
