ROP marks World Customs Day

Muscat: The Royal Oman Police marked the World Customs Day under the theme ‘Customs Engaging Traditional and New Partners with Purpose’.
A celebration was held at the Directorate-General of Customs in Muscat Governorate under the auspices of Brigadier Jamal bin Said al Taie, Director General of Financial Affairs at the Royal Oman Police (ROP).
Brigadier Said bin Khamis al Ghaithi, Director-General of Customs, stressed the importance of this day in promoting global trade, facilitating the movement of goods across borders, and re-assessing participation strategies to foster relations with partners and adding new partners.
Al Ghaithi stated that the Directorate-General of Customs has achieved a performance consistent with Oman Vision 2040, which is based on economic diversification and diversification of income sources by achieving a 4 per cent growth in the collection of customs revenues. In addition, trade exchange with the outside world saw an increase of 9 per cent. The volume of exports rose by 13 per cent and the value of imports increased by 2.5 per cent. Besides, combating smuggling and evasion saw 15 per cent improvement.
At the end of the ceremony, the chief guest honoured outstanding customs officers with the Certificate of Excellence provided by the World Customs Organization.
The chief guest alongside the attendees toured the customs exhibition at the Directorate-General of Customs during which they were briefed on the history of customs in the Sultanate of Oman and its role in combating smuggling and illicit trade. They viewed documents and records dating back to 1941.
