As part of instilling the importance of farming, a competition for children was held by a Facebook group to get them acquainted with all the stages of agriculture including preparing the soil, choosing the right seed and seedling, nurturing, and harvesting.

Organised by the Oman Krishikkoottam, a voluntary organic farming group in Oman, in collaboration with Indian School Buraimi, the ‘Little Green Fingers' contest witnessed an overwhelming participation from children.

The saplings for the competition were distributed to the students at the school assembly by Shantakumar Dashari, Principal of the school, at an event led by the members of The Oman Krishikkoottam Buraimi wing including Sreejith, Nishad, Dhanya, Rosh, Sanila, and Shaji.

This competition is conducted in three categories. Students from 1st to 3rd grade were given a sapling of Tomato, while 4th-6th graders were given seedlings of Tomato and Brinjal. Those in 7th to 10th grades received seedlings of Tomato, Brinjal and okra.

The competition runs from January 11, to April 5 during which period, photos and videos of the plants grown by students in their respective categories are to be submitted. The student who successfully grows plants with good health, yield, and care will be declared the winner.

“This is the second year that 'The Little Green Fingers' competition is being organised The Oman Krishikkoottam. The current competition has received the best response compared to the previous ones,” the Oman Krishikkoottam Buraimi members told the Observer.
