Oman Desert Marathon gears up for ninth edition

MUSCAT: The Oman Desert Marathon is set to make a return for its ninth edition, taking place from January 20 to 23 in the sands of Al Sharqiyah North Governorate in the northeast region.
Organisers have officially opened registration, inviting participants to engage in one of the world's most challenging running events.
This annual marathon, known for its extreme conditions and breathtaking landscapes, spans a distance of 165 kilometres, demanding exceptional endurance from each participant. The race unfolds against the backdrop of the Omani desert, offering a truly unique and immersive experience as runners navigate their way through golden dunes and enchanting terrains.
In addition to the main 165 km Classic Desert Race, the event offers a range of race categories catering to diverse preferences and abilities. Participants can choose from the 2 km Children's Race, 5 km Family Race, 10 km Suburb Penetration Race, Half Marathon 21 km, and Marathon 42 km. The event is sponsored by the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism, with collaborative support from various government and private entities.
The race gains great fame year after year by attracting more than 700 runners from various countries of the world. To embark on an unparalleled adventure in the embrace of the picturesque terrain of the Omani desert, allowing them to experience an unforgettable physical
experience amidst a vast expanse of enchanting surrounding scenery extending between the golden sand.
The marathon, starting from Al Wasil in the Wilayat of Bidiyah, is divided into four stages, each spanning distances of 42 km, 55 km, 47 km (Night Stage), and 21 km respectively. The course offers a picturesque route, passing historical forts and castles in the village of Al Wasil,
navigating through towering sand dunes, and providing runners with an immersive desert experience.
The night stage adds a magical touch, with the desert's enchanting charm and a sky adorned with glittering stars serving as the perfect conclusion. Then, the participants will rest at the Jowhar Bidiyah Resort at the finish line.
Saeed bin Mohammed al Hajri, head of the organising committee, said: 'The Oman Desert Marathon course is uniquely designed to provide an unparalleled and realistic desert experience. The Sultanate of Oman's stunning landscapes, from breathtaking mountains to desert dunes and magnificent valleys, offer marathon runners a perfect and unprecedented adventure.'
During the ODM, the participants must rely entirely on themselves, carrying all the race equipment except for water distributed at checkpoint locations, which are spaced 10 kilometres apart. This represents a real challenge for the runner, who will carry provisions
sufficient for four days and cover a distance of 165 km. However, it is an adventure that is worth the effort and allows participants to immerse themselves in an authentic desert experience.
