General camel races to begin in Barka today

MUSCAT: The general camel race competitions will begin at Al Fulaij Race field in Barka on Tuesday and will continue for three days.
The event is supported by the Royal Court Affairs represented by Royal Camel Corps (RCC) and organised by Oman Camel Racing Federation (OCRF).
As many as 75 races will be held over three days and a number of camels will qualify to the final race (HM cups), which will held in March to conclude camel racing season 2023-24.
The winning camels will qualify to the HM Cup Festival, also Royal Camel Corps will buy some of wining camels with best records.
The first day will witness 25 races dedicated to ‘Hagayeg’ category, two years old over a distance of 4 km, the top two winners will qualify to HM Cup Festival from the first 11 races. The RCC will purchase a camel with the best record in the category.
On the second day of competition, 16 races will be held for the ‘Laqaya’ category, three years old over a distance of 5 km, the top two winners will qualify to HM Cup Festival from the first 7 races. Also, RCC will purchase a camel with the best record from this category.
In the afternoon, there will be two races with human riders for 2 km. The top 10 from both races will qualify for the HM Cup Festival.
The third day will witness 7 rounds for ‘Al Ythaa’ category, four years old for 6 km. The top two winners will qualify to HM Cup Festival from the first 4 races. The RCC will purchase a camel with the best record from this category.
The competition will continue with three races for ‘Al Thanaya' category, five years old over a distance of 8 km, the best 13 camels from top two races will qualify for HM Cup race.
The race will conclude with ‘Al Hawl’ category, above six years for 8 km. The best 21 camels from top three races will qualify for HM Cups race.
The Royal Camel Corps announced some participating conditions, which is limited to purebred camels owned by Omani only and strictly prohibited to stimulate with blood or use stimulating substances and electric shocks.In all rounds, top ten winners will receive cash awards.
