Don’t make 2024 just like any other year resolution.

It’s the 2nd of January 2024 - over 87 percent of people I met over the years have made resolutions for desires, wishes, aims and changes for the better. Few achieved, yet many did not. This year too is no different, and the same can happen again in the next coming years. My aim with this weekly column starting this week is to share insights and practical steps I followed through-out the 30+ years of experience building personal and professional wealth. But first, let me share a reality that many encounter as part of the New Year resolutions fiasco.
So as the clock struck midnight on 2024, you were filled with excitements, determination and energy about the New Year solutions that you have set for yourself. Going to gym and exercise regularly to stay fit, eating quality and avoiding fast food to be healthy, reading books periodically to personally and professionally develop yourself, get married and have family, buy a house, and yes the list goes on, from wishes and desires to achieve. Items on your list may be long or some of them may even not apply to you, yet I am sure the idea is crystal clear – you have a lot of wishes that you aim to achieve, and the night of the New Year’s Eve is just the perfect day to plan. Wrong? This is why many people do not achieve their goals, because dependence is on this specific evening. Let me elaborate how will the year will look like to many wishers.
In January is where motivation for achieving your wishes start. You sign up for an annual gym membership, you shop for healthy food, you buy books on personal and professional development, and you also try to action some of the long-list of wishes you have set for the year. Reality sets in on February, or even on March for some, where weeks passes by to see you gradually miss gym sessions that you signed-up for, junk-food will find its way to your stomach, and the pile of books you bought will remain with unread chapters. Does this ring a bell to you?
Last year and the year before may not be any different to this and the next year. Trust me, I have been there and done that, on a personal level, but luckily, not on a scale of missing a full year-on due to not depending on New Year’s eve, yet on a regular personal and professional assessment I undertake every day, week or even every month, at worst case scenario. This, of course, has helped me get back on track and achieve almost every goal I had planned on a personal and professional level over the years. That’s simply because plans were not based on new-year’s eve.
Resolutions for becoming better, achieving results or attaining desired wishes are not magical but rather an ongoing commitment that one needs to strictly abide into. Looking back, I can confidentially attest that failure wasn't in setting goals yet was mostly on underestimating what it really takes to achieve them, starting from clearly having a realistic vision, followed by a concrete plan, put on a feasible time-line for action, along with constant follow-ups that are consistently celebrated when achieved successfully. This simple approach that I have followed has help me achieve profound results that I live and continue to undertake till date. How can one create a realistic yet practical vision is what I will share next week as part of my weekly insights on how to live successfully and build personal and professional wealth. Stay tuned to learn what it takes to achieve and transform yourself successfully in 2024.
